About the museum
Brantevik was the youngest fishing village on the Österlen coast, where the first known settlement took place in 1755. Fishing was early complemented by trade, and in the mid-1800s the village switched to larger vessels. Although the village lacked a harbour suitable for seafaring, the fleet grew quickly, and in 1899 there were 118 sailing vessels registered in Brantevik, the largest sailing fleet in the country counted by number of vessels.
The marine insurance association Hoppet (Hope) was formed in 1871 to insure vessels from the village, and in 1924 it had its own building erected on the plot where Brantevik’s first school had stood. When the association ceased in 1955, it was reformed the following year as Stiftelsen Hoppet (the Hoppet Foundation), which runs the maritime museum and later also a fishing museum in the house.
The collections consist for the most part of gifts from people of Brantevik with ties to seafaring and fishing. Ship paintings and models make up the main part, alongside navigational instruments, hand tools and sea rescue equipment from the time of the sea rescue station 1855–1957. The upper floor is devoted to fishing, and the museum also shows ship registers (skeppslistor) and personal and family registers from 1755 to 1924.
