About the museum
Gislövs Smidesmuseum was founded in 1975 by a non-profit membership association, which was formed the same year on the basis of several private collections of forged objects in the village. The museum opened in 1976 in Gislöv's former school. On the school grounds stands a detached and well-preserved smithy that was used until the 1940s. The association bought it, and it now belongs to the museum.
The village of Gislöv long had three smithies, one of which is still used as a demonstration smithy. The smithy has a full set of tools, and at certain times in summer a smith works at the forge. The house also contains a small mini-museum with exhibitions that are renewed every year.
The museum's collections are currently stored in Simrishamn, and only a selection is shown in the smithy. The association Gislövs Smidesmuseum och Byagille runs the activities with voluntary efforts. It also manages the village's old school building, Byagården, which can be rented by members.
