About the museum
Museum Lars Jonsson is located in Vamlingbo vicarage (prästgård) on Storsudret, the southernmost part of Gotland. The vicarage was completed in 1779 and is a listed building (byggnadsminne) and one of the best-preserved vicarage environments on the island. The high roof ridge bears witness to the parish's former importance. The two cow-shed wings were built in the 19th century and today house, among other things, naturum Gotland.
The museum opened in 2004 and is run by the artist Lars Jonsson and his family. Lars Jonsson was born in Stockholm in 1952 and is an artist, writer and ornithologist. He exhibited at the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet (Swedish Museum of Natural History) as early as the age of fifteen, and gained international recognition for his field guides to birds in the mid-1970s. He works mainly out in the field and paints directly from the impressions he gets through the spotting scope; most of the watercolours and several of the oil paintings are painted outdoors. At home in the studio he works from sketchbooks with thousands of studies of birds, landscapes and light effects. In 2002 he became an honorary doctor at Uppsala University.
The vicarage was bought in 2003 by Heligholm Utvecklings AB from the Church of Sweden, and since the New Year of 2015 Lars Jonsson has owned the vicarage and garden through Vamlingbo Prästgården AB. The exhibition of sketches and paintings is rehung at regular intervals and most often reflects the season and current projects and journeys. It is shown in five rooms on the upper floor; on the ground floor there is a print gallery and a shop.
