About the museum
The Spenarve farm in Havdhem in southern Gotland has existed since the 14th century. Gotland Municipality gave the farm to Havdhems hembygdsförening (Havdhem local heritage association) in 1983, but the association renounced responsibility as early as 1984. On 6 November 1986 the Stiftelsen Gotlands Lantbruksmuseum (Gotland Agricultural Museum Foundation) was formed, which a year later took over the financial administration. The foundation consists of Havdhems hembygdsförening, Region Gotland, Gotlands fornvänner (Gotland antiquarian society), Gotlands hushållningssällskap (Gotland agricultural society), LRF Gotland (Federation of Swedish Farmers, Gotland) and Gotlands hembygdsförbund (Gotland local heritage federation).
The museum shows the different parts of farming and the moments of the farming year, with emphasis on the history and importance of Gotland's agriculture and on mechanisation from the early 20th century to the 1960s. The large barn holds hand, horse and tractor implements, veteran tractors and agricultural machines, a laundry room and a carpenter's shed (snickarbod). There is also a schoolroom with fittings from the late 19th century onwards, a collection of old clothes and a shoemaker's workshop.
The museum is run on a voluntary basis, arranges theme days such as spring work, an engine-starting evening, a tractor parade and threshing day, and has over 1,000 square metres of floor space for its exhibitions.
