About the museum

Kattlunds in Grötlingbo is one of the best-preserved medieval farms in the Nordic countries, dating back to the 13th century. The farm probably took its name from its first known owner, the farmer Johannes Kattlund, who lived here at the end of the 13th century.

Parts of the main farmhouse and the large barn range date from the Middle Ages. Through alterations and additions in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the buildings have grown into a unique farmyard image shaped by local building traditions. Well-preserved stone walls form an enclosure system around the farm’s various functions, including a herb garden with medicinal plants and an orchard with local apple varieties.

The farm has been owned by Föreningen Gotlands Fornvänner (Gotland Friends of Antiquities) since 1922 and was declared a listed building in 1969. It is part of Gotlands Museum’s museum farms. The outdoor areas are open to the public with information boards and a marked nature and culture trail, while the indoor areas and the café are closed until further notice.
