About the museum
Naturum Gotland opened in 2005 and is located in the southern cow-shed wing by Vamlingbo vicarage in southern Gotland, just under nine mil (a Swedish measure of distance) south of Visby. The principal is the County Administrative Board of Gotland (Länsstyrelsen i Gotlands län), and the naturum is run in accordance with the requirements of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) for state-run naturum, with staffed personnel, generous opening hours and free admission.
The task is to explain and create understanding of what is special about Gotland, and to inspire visitors to spend time in nature and make contact with it, with tips on beautiful and interesting places in the surrounding area. Here one also gets information on the nature values of the local area and on human impact on them.
The basic exhibition stays in place from year to year and is designed to leave the architecture of the building undisturbed, with sparingly used walls and large display cases that lift things off the floor. It deals with Gotland from its origins 400 million years ago to today's landscape. In addition, temporary exhibitions are shown for shorter periods. Outside there is the naturum's outdoor room (uterum) with a bee hotel and a nature trail behind the vicarage's market garden (handelsträdgård).
