About the museum
The Centre for Bastabinne is run by Ödenäs local heritage society, which was formed in 1970 to safeguard the traditions of the district. The museum is a small but rich working-life museum that shows a living craft heritage which has supported the population in Ödenäs for centuries.
In poor districts where the arable land was not enough, many places made a living from various crafts. In Ödenäs it was bastabinne that almost the whole population practised. The whole family helped to binna, that is, to bind, bags for sale. The craft was sold at markets, to dealers or, most commonly, left at the local shops in exchange for food, without any cash changing hands.
In the exhibition visitors become acquainted with the technique, the material of spruce bast and the products – herring baskets, mats, fish traps (mjärdar), ropes and log-floating ropes – and with the craftspeople, the trade and how the work was organised. In 2014 bastabinne in Ödenäs was one of the first elements to be included on the Swedish UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. A book on the subject, “Ödenäs och bastabinnet – från gran till sillakass”, has been published.
