About the museum
Närsen-Grontjärns Järnväg, abbreviated NGJ, is a privately owned hobby railway with 600 mm track gauge in the forest by the lake Närsen just west of Dala-Floda. The line has been built up by two railway enthusiasts, father and son, since 1986. The first rails were laid in July 1986 on the family's summer cottage plot.
The line is about 1 km long and also has a shorter section with 500 mm gauge. There are many locomotives and wagons, several different rail draisines, an engine shed, turntables, track and points. The rolling stock is mostly restored to its original condition, and some pieces are replicas or home-built. The aim is to show what the many closed and forgotten small industrial railways could look like.
On open days visitors can get a guided tour among the locomotives and wagons and sometimes ride a train through the forest from Närsen Nedre to the mining area at Närsviken, a distance of about 300 metres.
