About the museum
Kvarna lies scenically along the Närsströmmen stream, which flows from Kvarnsjön west of Dala-Floda. The area was the parish's old industrial district, and as early as 1664 four mills are mentioned in the land register (jordeboken): Överkvarn, Mellankvarn, Lisskvarn and Storkvarn. The mills were driven by water from Kvarnsjön and were used five days a week, but never on Sundays or public holidays. Around 1910 grinding ceased completely.
The environment was restored in 1990–1994 and is today preserved as a cultural reserve. Storkvarn is now the fulling mill, where you can see how woollen cloth (vadmal) was prepared with all its accessories. In the area there is also a skvaltkvarn (water mill), a takpertmaskin (takpert machine), a tar kiln, a charcoal burner's hut and a ryggåsstuga (a type of cottage with a ridge beam), as well as a small power station that supplies electricity for the area's lighting.
Floda hembygdsförening (Floda Local Heritage Society) shows the area and receives booked visits. In summer the Kvarnadagen (Mill Day) is held, with kolbullar and entertainment.
