About the museum
Utanheds kvarn was built in 1869–1870 by Josef Lars Larsson beside the Västerdalälven. The mill was a toll mill, where farmers paid to have their grain ground into flour. The circular saw was built together with the mill on its eastern side after 1880. The mill and saw were passed down within the family, and operations continued until 1941, when the last log was sawn. A few years later the business ceased entirely.
In 1961 the site was given to Nås Local Heritage Society (earlier Nås Local Heritage Guild), which was tasked with looking after the mill in its original location. A comprehensive restoration was carried out in 1984–1986 with funds from the Riksantikvarieämbetet (Swedish National Heritage Board), and the mill could thereafter grind flour again. The roof was replaced in a new restoration in 2020, and the site was declared a listed building in 2018.
Water is led from the river through a channel about 300 metres long to the mill building, which has three storeys and two mills with two pairs of millstones each, each driven by its own water turbine. The building also houses a carpentry workshop and remains of a wheelwright's workshop.
