About the museum

Överhogdals forngård is based on the so-called Överhogdal tapestries (Överhogdalsbonaderna), textile finds discovered in 1909 in a storehouse by Överhogdal church. The tapestries are dated to around 1000–1100, the transition between the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, and the originals are shown today at the county museum Jamtli in Östersund.

The farmstead has a permanent exhibition of exact copies woven with the original technique. The exhibition has three rooms: one about the find and the people involved, one about the tools and plants used for weaving and dyeing, and one with a complete copy of the five parts. The copy was woven from 1985 and completed in 2012, and beside it four different interpretations of the picture world are shown.

On the site there is also a newly built grain barn, an old smithy and a reconstructed bloomery (blästerugn) from 1998, where iron is produced from bog ore. Överhogdal lies in Härjedalen, where the national border between Sweden and Norway ran until the Peace of Brömsebro in 1645, and pilgrims on their way to Nidaros (Trondheim) passed through the village.
