About the museum
Ljunga Elfs Flottningsbolag started timber floating on the Ljungan in 1869, and it went on for almost a hundred years, until 1968. At Eldnäset the company established a floating station in the 19th century, with a factor's residence (faktorbostad), a smithy, a storehouse (magasin), a barn building and a quay. Floating was for a long time the easiest way to get timber to the large sawmills on the coast, until roads and railways made other transport more profitable.
In 1997–98 buildings, quay and jetty were repaired, and in summer 2000 the museum was inaugurated in the old storehouse. The museum shows documentation on timber floating, old photographs and the equipment that was used. Visitors can also see slide shows about the lives of the log drivers (flottarna), and outdoors a forest hut (skogskoja) and a charcoal kiln (kolmila).
