About the museum
Överums bruk (Överum ironworks) was founded in 1655 by Walloons, who were drawn by the proximity of ore, forest and waterfalls. In the beginning pig iron, bar iron, cannons and cannonballs were produced. A manufactory forge was built in 1776 and began to make horseshoes, nails, axes, spades and household goods, and cannon casting ended around 1800.
The ironworks museum is housed in the old, well-preserved hammer forge and tells the story of the works’ 350-year history and products. Here are one of the three original bar-iron hammers and a German hearth in original condition, which is described as the only one preserved in Sweden. A miniature landscape shows how Överum looked in the past, and the museum also shows objects from the works’ production.
In the 1850s the works began making ploughs and then other agricultural tools. Later came, among other things, timber products, windows and doors, electric motors and parts for office machines. Today ploughs, seed drills and manure spreaders are made at the works, which is still in operation. At its peak in the 1970s the company had around 1,000 employees, and in 2005 the works celebrated its 350th anniversary.
