About the museum
Paul Jönska gården is an old ship captain's farmhouse and a working life museum in Viken. The farm was built in 1878 for ship captain Paul Jönsson and his wife Hilda Paulina, on a plot given to them by her parents. The rendered dwelling house stands along the road, and north of the paved farmyard is a yellow-brick wing with red details.
The rooms of the house are furnished with the family's original furniture and with the objects the ship captain brought home from his voyages in Europe, including gifts for his wife and children. Everything remains and can be seen in the house. After their mother's death in 1923, two of the children took over the home, and the daughters later bequeathed their share to the church so that the farm would be preserved and shown to the public.
The farm is owned and managed by the Stiftelsen Skeppargården i Viken foundation and has been a museum since 1982. It was declared a listed historic building (byggnadsminne) in 1987. The garden behind the house was reconstructed in the 1980s and is open to visitors all year round. Several rare roses grow there, including the variety Prince de Bulgarie, of which the specimen at the house is, according to a rose expert, the only known one in Sweden.
