About the museum
Vikens Sjöfartsmuseum (Viken Maritime Museum) has existed as an association since 1957. The following year the bridge of the steamship S/S Eriksborg was inaugurated as a museum. The bridge gradually became damp-damaged and too cramped for all the objects that were donated, and in the 1980s the collections moved to the so-called spruthuset (fire-engine house), which had previously been used by Vikens Frivilliga Brandkår (Viken Volunteer Fire Brigade).
The museum holds about 1,500 inventoried objects and documents that tell of the time when Viken was a significant fishing and seafaring town. Sailing ships have been built in Viken since time immemorial, documented from 1738, and many shipowners had the place as their home port. From 1872 to 1948 there was a pilot station in Viken, and the pilots also served the Svinbådan lightship, which lay out in the sound from 1866 to 1960.
The permanent exhibition shows models and depictions of ships from the place, tools and navigation instruments, seamen's handicrafts and memories of long voyages, as well as objects from shipbuilding, piloting and fishing. Every summer a theme exhibition is also held.
