About the museum
Sophiamöllan, also called Vikens kvarn (Viken Mill), is a Dutch-type wind mill (vädermölla) that was completed for inauguration in 1838. The builder was the Danish-born sea captain Niels Petter Nielsen-Lindberg. The mill was built because farming in the district had developed and needed greater milling capacity than the old stubbe mill (stubbekvarnen) on the meadows north of the village could provide. A new mill with two pairs of millstones was to meet the need.
The mill’s sails turned well into the 1900s. It milled with wind power until 1940, and after that the wind was replaced by electric and steam power, which made the old wind-driven mills superfluous. In 1925 there were still 21 mills grinding flour in the Kulla district, and today twelve survive. The milling works in Sophiamöllan has been restored so that flour can once again be milled in the traditional way.
Today the mill is managed by Stiftelsen Sophiamöllan (the Sophiamöllan Foundation), which together with Vikens kultur- och byaförening (Viken Culture and Village Association) keeps it open in summer. Visitors can join guided tours, where the guides tell the history of the mill and show how flour was milled in earlier times. The mill’s storehouse section, Östra Magasinet, is furnished as a meeting room and can be rented.
