About the museum
Piteå museum is a culture history museum for the Pite district, run by Föreningen Piteå museum (Piteå Museum Association), a non-profit association with almost 300 members. The association was formed on 14 November 1936 under the name Pitebygdens fornminnesförening (Pite District Antiquities Association), with cantor Olov Selinus as its first chairman, and changed its name in 1998.
The first museum, the local history museum on Kvarnbacken, was inaugurated on 28 June 1942 in Blomska gården, which had been moved there in the 1930s to avoid demolition. The culture history collections came through gifts from private individuals. In 1980 the museum moved into new premises in the town hall at Rådhustorget, where it is today.
The basic exhibition Tre platser, tre skeden av Piteås historia (Three Places, Three Stages of Piteå’s History) tells of Gamla Kyrkbyn, Öjebyn and Häggholmen, to where the town was moved after the town fire of 1666. There is, among other things, a large model of the wooden town of Piteå as it looked in 1898. The museum has collections of objects, photographs and art linked to Piteå Municipality, and runs a museum shop, an archive and its own book publishing house.
