About the museum
The building that houses the craft museum dates back at least to the 1800s and from 1835 was a soldier's croft (soldattorp). In the 1960s the farm was used by the log-driving association (flottningsföreningen) until 1967, when log driving ended. Afterwards it was so dilapidated that it was classed as a house to be demolished.
Byske hantverksförening, founded in 1917, had long wanted its own premises for meetings and get-togethers. The association obtained a lease from Skellefteå Municipality in 1971, the house was renovated in the 1970s and was donated to the association in 1979. When many objects from the district's old crafts had been given, a craft museum was formed in 1983, the objects were labelled and catalogued, and the museum opened for the first time on 12 June 1987.
The museum is by the road between Byske Havsbad and Byske town centre and tells the story of the district's craftspeople and their tools.
