About the museum
The Upsala–Lenna Jernväg opened in 1876 between Uppsala and Länna and was built with a narrow gauge of 891 mm to save money. The line became part of a network that grew across Roslagen between 1876 and 1928. The Stockholm–Rimbo Jernväg took over the Lenna–Norrtälje Jernväg in 1905 and the Upsala–Lenna Jernväg in 1908, and the combined company was named Stockholm–Roslagens Järnvägar. In the 1920s to 1940s the network comprised 326 km of track and about 930 km of bus routes.
After the state took over in 1951 and the Statens Järnvägar in 1959, the railways faced tough competition from the car. The last passenger train between Uppsala and Rimbo ran on 31 December 1966. The museum association Stockholm–Roslagens Järnvägar was formed in 1968 to save part of the network, and museum trains began to run between Uppsala and Faringe. Since 1977 the route has been operated solely as a museum railway under the name Lennakatten.
The name comes from a steam rail bus, Lennakatten, whose hissing sound the local people compared to a cat; the nickname later passed to the other trains on the line. The association has over 2,000 members, and the work is carried out voluntarily. Traffic is operated with historic steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and rail buses, and about 40 per cent of the former Roslagen network remains in kilometres.
