About the museum
Österfors smedja is a water-powered smithy built in 1876 and run by three generations of smiths. The last smith, Sigvard Sigge Jonsson, closed the business in 1970 after almost a hundred years, and he donated the smithy to Ydre Municipality.
The smithy lies by the Buleån river in Österbymo in Sunds parish. For a few weeks each summer it is open to visitors, and then a summer smith, Mikael, shows visitors around and forges iron. At other times groups can contact the municipality for information and booking.
