About the museum
Penningby slott (Penningby Castle) lies on a rocky promontory in Roslagen, about 10 km south of Norrtälje. The present stone house began to be built after 1466 and is one of Sweden's oldest secular buildings. By the middle of the 16th century the building had acquired its two diagonally placed cannon towers, which allowed flanking fire, and few Swedish private castles have preserved the construction as well.
From 1673 the defensive castle was rebuilt into a palace in the style of the time, with mansard roofs and larger windows, and the rebuilding was complete by the early 1730s. The two cellar floors retained their medieval character and contain, among other things, a very large well. After a fire in 1831 the roof and the upper parts were destroyed, and the castle was simplified rather than restored.
Simon Nordström bought Penningby in 1836, and since 1949 the castle has been run as a limited company by the family, today by the fifth and sixth generations. The interiors of the main floors date from the 1730s and 1810s. The castle has been a filming location for several film and TV productions and has been a listed building since 1980.
Today the castle is shown on guided tours in the summer, and it is also used for concerts and other cultural events.
