About the museum
Särdal's lifesaving station was built in 1908 on the initiative of Sveriges allmänna sjöfartsförening (the Swedish General Seafarers' Association) and was paid for with donations. The background was the September storm of 1903, when twenty merchant sailing vessels (skutor) were wrecked between Vinga and Ängelholm and sixty seamen drowned. The station was equipped with the rowing lifeboat Otto Stenberg and inaugurated on 28 October 1908 at a major exercise with the station's volunteer crew.
In time the station became outdated and was closed in 1957, when Svenska Sällskapet för Räddning af Skeppsbrutne (the Swedish Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons) donated the facility to Harplinge hembygdsförening (Harplinge local heritage society). The society made it into a museum of lifesaving, seafaring and fishing.
The museum shows the lifeboat Otto Stenberg, the rocket apparatus and other rescue equipment, various fishing gear and screen exhibitions with old photographs. There is also a model of the lifeboat at a scale of 1:20. The building was renovated in 2026, with new windows and facades.
