About the museum

The cinema was a dream for the ore-processing worker Östen Dahlberg, who came from Vilhelmina. Because there was no electricity in the village, he had to wait, and in the meantime the family ran an open-air dance floor. When electricity came to Adak in 1943 the family began building a cinema, which was completed in 1945. The premises were also a general meeting place for culture and entertainment.

Competition from other cinemas increased, and after television arrived it became harder. The cinema closed in 1965, and the family left Adak but let the cinema and home stand furnished. The building was nevertheless abandoned, until Alve Johansson in the late 1980s persuaded several villagers to take care of the cultural treasure. The Sagabiografen interest association was formed, and it renovated the cinema and the home so that they could be opened to the public.

Today Sagabiografen is a 1940s experience, with original interiors in both the cinema and the home, posters from the 1940s and 1950s, and a homemade drape with gold stars in front of the cinema screen. The building is a working life museum. Since 2002 the farm has also housed the Elviramuséet, with the mineral collections of the amateur geologist Elvira Lundström. A film festival has been held in the cinema every July since 1993, and in 2025–2026 the floor was renovated.
