About the museum
The story began on 29 November 1946, when mine worker Albert Jönsson, after a blast at a depth of 107 metres in the Kristineberg mine, discovered a Christ-like image in the rock wall. The image was photographed and spread in the newspapers, and people from all over the world travelled to the mine to see it. Over time the image faded away and the space was filled in.
In 1985 construction began of a church in the mine, and Sankta Anna Underjordskyrka (Sankta Anna Underground Church) was inaugurated in 1990. The church is named after the miners' patron saint, is ecumenical and holds about 100 people. On the chancel wall there is a painted copy of the Christ image. Next to the church, an exhibition shows older mining machines, pictures and information about the Kristineberg mine, where mining began in 1935. The facility is run by the economic association Kristinebergs Fritid ekonomisk förening, and the church is also used for services, weddings and baptisms.
