About the museum

The museum is housed in the palace of the Bjälbo family, built in the 1260s by the royal kin of Birger jarl and counted as the best-preserved high medieval palace in the Nordic countries. It was a house for royal representation and one of Sweden's first brick buildings, with windows, gallery walks and a hypocaust. King Magnus Eriksson and Queen Blanka bequeathed the estate in 1346 to become a monastery, and after the pope's confirmation in 1370 it became the mother house of Birgitta's new monastic order.

The last nuns left the monastery in 1595. The area then became a home for invalid soldiers from the wars of the Age of Greatness (stormaktstiden), the first permanent veterans' housing in Europe. For a short time the house was used as a lighter prison, and in the 1820s it became part of Vadstena hospital for the mentally ill. The last patients moved out in the 1950s, and during the renovation the different phases of the house were revealed bit by bit.

Today Sancta Birgitta Klostermuseum is run by Östergötlands museum. The exhibitions deal with the life and influence of St Birgitta, the history of the building from royal palace to hospital, and monastic life. Visitors can see the nuns' dormitory and the coffin in which Birgitta's remains were carried across Europe.
