About the museum
The Wadstena–Fogelsta railway opened in 1874 and was financed by the town of Vadstena, which wanted to connect to the main line between Mjölby and Hallsberg. The line was built narrow-gauge to keep costs down, with a track gauge of 891 millimeters, three Swedish feet. It is about 9.6 kilometers long and is all that remains of a narrow-gauge network in Östergötland that once extended about 450 kilometers.
During the 20th century the line became part of the Mellersta Östergötlands Järnväg, which was an early adopter of electric traction. Electric trains ran on the route to Vadstena from Christmas Eve 1921, and electric operation was discontinued in 1956. Passenger traffic on the narrow-gauge line ceased in 1963, except on the Vadstena–Fogelsta section, and freight traffic there ended on 1 June 1978.
The museum association Wadstena Fogelsta Järnväg was formed in 1974 to preserve the line, which the association leases from Vadstena Municipality. The first museum train to Fogelsta ran in 1988. Today traffic is run on a voluntary basis: a classic rail bus is used for passenger trains, while the small industrial locomotive Hulken is used for work trains. The association also arranges open house at Vadstena station, with guided tours of the engine shed and workshop, and offers rail-cycling on the line.
