About the museum
Sandhammarens räddningsstation (Sandhammaren rescue station) was part of the state sea rescue service and is the oldest station in the country. In 1855 the state set up a boat and rocket station at Mälarhusen, and in 1891 the station was moved to Sandhammaren near the two lighthouses. The lifeboat, built in Copenhagen in 1855 with yard number 409, is considered Sweden’s first lifeboat; it is a yellow clinker-built oak boat of 8.41 metres. During the 90 years of operation 599 people were rescued. The station was closed in 1945, when sea rescue moved to Kåseberga.
The boat remained in its boathouse thanks to private initiatives, and an interest association was formed in 2006. Ystad Municipality owns the site and officially opened a museum there in 2007. In the boathouse from 1891 the boat stands on its carriage, and in a replica of the old equipment shed the rocket apparatus, the rescue basket and other equipment are kept. The association R-S runs the museum and keeps it open at certain times.
The museum tells the story of the station and of the rescuers’ efforts for shipwrecked sailors. Next to it stands Sandhammarens fyr (Sandhammaren lighthouse), which is run by a separate association.
