About the museum
Skillinge Sjöfartsmuseum shows how Skillinge developed into a prosperous seafaring community with many shipowning partnerships (partrederier) in the period 1830–1950. When sail navigation declined, fishing increased, which the museum also depicts.
The museum is in the old schoolhouse, built in 1858. The school remained until 1890, and the building was then used as a municipal hall (municipalhus) until 1953, when the municipal community (municipalsamhället) ceased. The Stiftelsen Skillinge Municipalhus foundation bought the house in 1963, and in 1986 Skillinge Sjöfartsminnesförening (Skillinge Maritime Memorial Association) took over the operation under the guiding words “Vårda, Värna och Visa” (Care, Protect and Show). The museum was set up in the house in 1972.
The collections consist of ship paintings and ship models, seamen's handicrafts, seamen's memories, beachcombing finds and other curiosities, together with photographs, documents and press clippings about Skillinge's history. The museum shop sells books about Skillinge and seafaring, souvenirs and a booklet about the village's businesses from the 1950s onwards.
