About the museum
Österlens skolmuseum is located in Östra Tommarp in Simrishamn Municipality and is run by Hembygdskretsen Tumathorp (Tumathorp local heritage circle). The village's first school was built in 1727 of stone from Tommarp monastery, on the orders of parish priest Nils Nyman, after the king had decreed in 1678 that catechisms and prayer books should be in Swedish. The house was destroyed in a great fire in 1911 and rebuilt, and it became a museum in 1955.
The museum consists of a schoolroom furnished as it was at the turn of the previous century, a local museum with parish and monastery exhibits, and an adjoining 18th-century house, Esbjörnshuset (the Esbjörn House), with period interiors. Destination Österlen presents the school building together with Klosterplatsen (the Monastery Site), where the remains of the Premonstratensian monastery are partly hidden, and Esbjörnshuset as part of Tommarp's museums.
A short distance from the school lies the lime kiln, which in its present form was built around 1862 and was in use until 1907. Limestone from the district was burnt in the kiln with wood chips and charcoal, and the kiln was walled up when it was full. The lime kiln was renovated and repointed in 2018.
