About the museum

Skogs- och samemuseet i Lycksele AB has a regional responsibility for the forest and the history of forestry, and for making the culture and cultural heritage of the Sámi visible. The company manages Stiftelsen Skogsmuseet i Lycksele (the Lycksele Forestry Museum Foundation), properties belonging to the Valborg and Bertil Wiinka Foundation, the savings bank foundation’s collection Samiska skatter (Sámi Treasures) and the national organisation Same Ätnam’s craft collection.

The museum lies at Gammplatsen, a promontory in the Ume River where Sámi, settlers and traders used to meet. Church festivals were celebrated here several times a year, and markets and court negotiations were held. Today several relocated buildings stand in the area, among them Margaretakyrkan (St Margaret’s Church), a copy of Lycksele’s second church from 1736, Brudstugan (the Bridal Cottage) from 1760, a forest hut, a skittle alley from the late 19th century and Samegården (the Sámi Farm) with the Sámi dwelling (samevistet), where Lycksele sameförening (Lycksele Sámi Association) has built up kåtor (tents) and storage huts.

The forestry basic exhibition shows manual and mechanised forestry in the buildings Huggarepoken (the Chopping Era) and Maskinepoken (the Machine Era), while the Sámi basic exhibition includes, among others, Samer i skog (Sámi in the Forest), Same Ätnam’s craft collection and the cultural area Raamesuenne/Ramsele. In summer the Jaktmuseet (Hunting Museum) and the Textilmuseet (Textile Museum) on the shopping street are also shown. The museum also has a library, an archive and digitised collections with several thousand objects and photographs.
