About the museum
Siknäsfortet (Siknäs Fort) was built in secret in 1957–1960 at Hömyrberget on the Siknäs peninsula to protect Törehamn, Sweden’s northernmost deep-water harbour, and to prevent a hostile advance towards Boden via the E4. The fort was part of the Kalix Line (Kalixlinjen) and is a fixed army battery with four underground levels, armed with 15.2 cm guns from the armoured cruiser HMS Fylgia in rotating turrets. It was protected against ABC agents (ABC-stridsmedel) and had a combat control centre, quarters, a kitchen and emergency power.
The fort was decommissioned in 1998 after more than forty years of service. The Stiftelsen Siknäsfortet (Siknäs Fort Foundation) was formed in 2013 to preserve the fort as a museum and to increase knowledge of the importance of the Kalix Line. Two of the original installations remain: turret A is preserved both outside and inside, and turret B outside.
Today the museum offers guided tours through the fort during the season. In Töre harbour there is a submarine museum with HMS Spiggen II, Sweden’s only domestically built midget submarine, and in Morjärv the foundation also manages a First World War redoubt (skansen) and an air defence tower from 1940.
