About the museum
Baksjölidens mill installation lies by a mill stream in the village of Baksjöliden, just over one mil from Fredrika. The installation consists of a flutter-wheel mill (skvaltkvarn) from the 1860s and a wood-shaving planer (spånhyvel). The mill was important to the villagers, who ground their own grain into flour. Millstones of this type could also be set so that the grain was only crushed into coarse flakes, which were then used in distilling spirits. Planed wood shavings were used, among other things, for roofing when houses were built.
The installation fell into disrepair but was restored in 1962–1965 by Domänverket, and Sveaskog carried out a further restoration in autumn 2015. The mill and the planer are described as working. By the flutter-wheel mill there is a shelter with a barbecue site, and nearby lie a nature reserve and a large system of trap pits (fångstgropar).
The area around the mill stream is of great cultural-historical interest. Guided tours and visits to the mill can be booked through the village.
