About the museum
Slätteryds skola was built in 1913 in Unnaryd parish. The parish was extensive and was divided into six school districts (skolrotar), each with its own schoolhouse for children who lived far from the church village: Boda, Färda, Hjälmshult, Slätteryd, Sävsås and Yås. The schools were built to the same drawings and had a schoolroom, a cloakroom and a separate entrance for the children.
Teaching in Slätteryd ceased in 1954, when Centralskolan (the central school) in Unnaryd opened. Most of the other schoolhouses have been converted into dwellings, but Slätteryd's village school has remained almost intact since it was built. Hylte Municipality handed the school over to the local heritage association in the early 1990s, and the County Administrative Board declared it a listed building in 2007.
In the schoolroom stand double desks in three rows, and there is a teacher's desk, a cast-iron stove, a pump organ, school posters and an elk head on the wall. Visitors can also see the teacher's dwelling and a 1950s environment.
