Chalanderska museet

About the museum

The Chalanderska museet opened on 18 August 1984 in the former village hall (bygdegård) in Jälluntofta, which Jälluntofta samhällsförening (village association) donated to the newly formed Chalanderska stiftelsen (foundation). The museum shows objects by the fine cabinetmaker Johannes Chalander (1844–1931).

Chalander grew up in modest circumstances after his father's early death, moved with his family to Jälluntofta and as a young man walked on foot to Stockholm, where he trained as a cabinetmaker and was awarded a bronze medal for his journeyman's piece. He then lived abroad for around twenty years, including in Germany, France and England, and became known for furniture with marquetry in woods such as svartek and ebony. One cabinet in the museum consists of about 4,000 parts.

In addition to the furniture, the museum has a workshop section, Snickarboa, with many old tools, and a clockmaker's workshop belonging to his son Daniel Chalander.
