About the museum
Skultuna Messingsbruk (brass works) was established in 1607 on the initiative of King Karl IX to reduce the import of brass and to provide an outlet for copper from the Falun copper mine. Casting masters were recruited from Germany and Holland, and the works still lies in the same place by the Svartån river in Skultuna, about 1.5 mil (Swedish miles) north of Västerås. The oldest known chandelier from Skultuna is in Vårfrukyrkan (Church of Our Lady) in Enköping and is dated 1619.
The museum is located in connection with the works' shop and bistro and shows selected parts of the history. There you will find, among other things, the baptismal font that Carl Hjalmar Norrström designed and which won a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900, and Per Forssell's collection of objects that his father Pierre Forssell created for Skultuna. Pierre Forssell was employed as a designer at the works in the later part of the 20th century and contributed Scandinavian modernist products.
Production at the works has continued without interruption since 1607, and today mainly final finishing, such as polishing, grinding, assembly and inspection, takes place in Skultuna. The museum has free admission.
