About the museum

The Gyllene Hjulet motorcycle museum is located in the former inn and works canteen (bruksmässen) in Surahammar, which Surahammars Bruks AB had built. From 1949 to 1984 the building operated as the Värdshuset Gyllene Hjulet inn and mainly served meals to the bachelors working at the ironworks. The museum opened in 1985 and is run on a voluntary basis by the motorcycle history club Motorcykelhistoriska Klubben Mälardalen, MCHK Mälardalen.

The exhibition shows the development of two-wheelers, from penny-farthings and pedal bicycles to motorcycles and mopeds up to the 1970s. The museum has around 120 items. Most of the vehicles belong to club members and are roadworthy, so sometimes a machine is missing when its owner is at a rally or another event. Each year the museum has a theme, and in 2026 it is Monark, whose products range from motorcycles and bicycles to skis and radio sets.

Surahammar also has a special place in Swedish car history. In 1897 engineer Gustaf Eriksson designed Sweden's first car with an internal combustion engine here, and in Gustaf Eriksons rum (Gustaf Eriksson's room) there is a replica of this vehicle. The museum also shows two loaned police motorcycles from the Police Museum (Polismuseet) in Stockholm, a reconstructed old IC petrol station outside the building, and wall paintings by the artists Jerk Werkmäster and Nils-Aron Berge.
