About the museum
Surahammars bruk began making railway wheels in 1866. The museum is located in the works' old workshop building, which was built in 1845–1847 by the works owner Erik Adolf Zethelius, and many of the original machines remain in their places: furnaces, hammers and rolling mill. Visitors can follow the iron's path from pig iron to finished railway wheels.
According to the municipality, the museum was opened as early as the 1920s and was renovated in the 1950s. Since then it has been a place where the history of the works is kept alive.
In addition to the workshop there is a carriage hall with, among other things, the owner's fine carriage from 1900, an old hearse and the small locomotive Vaulunder with two carriages. The locomotive ran on the Lisjö line (Lisjöbanan) between Surahammar and Lisjö and has been in use since 1876.
A guided tour takes about an hour and shows the entire production chain and the museum's objects. The premises are not heated, so warm clothing is recommended in cold weather.
