About the museum
The engine shed in Kisa was built in 1901 by Östra Centralbanans Järnvägsaktiebolag (Eastern Central Railway Company) in a historicising, castle-like architectural style. It is a single-entry roundhouse for minor repair work, combined with a water tower with a pump mechanism. The drawings were made by Johan Lagerström, who also designed the engine shed in Vimmerby.
By 1943 the shed had been extended with a boiler room and a locomotive stall. Outside there is a turntable of riveted iron and wooden planks, 15 metres in diameter, and a cast-iron water crane (vattenhäst) for filling steam locomotives with water.
Since 2005 the building has been owned by the association Stångådalsbanans Vänner (Friends of the Stångådalsbanan railway), which has restored the exterior to its 1901 condition, with the boiler room and the locomotive stall as additions. The engine shed was reinaugurated in 2009 and became a protected building in 2014. The association also displays railway vehicles at the engine shed, including car wagon No. 25, G1 No. 231 and N1 No. 70.
