About the museum
Söderfors ironworks was founded in 1676 to forge anchors for the navy, and Söderfors hembygdsförening (local heritage society) today shows parts of the old works environment. The homestead museum was originally an inn (värdshus) built in the mid-1700s; the society took it over in 1981 and uses it for its meetings and for hire.
Ankarsmedjan, the smaller of the works' two anchor smithies, was built in 1786, and anchor forging took place there until 1883. The smithy was renovated in 1992 and now functions as a museum, where the slideshow “Järnarvet” (The Iron Heritage) tells of Söderfors past and present. Änkehuset was built in 1776 on the initiative of Anna Johanna Grill the Elder (d.ä.) as a social project for the widows of the works, and in two rooms it is shown how the widows lived in different periods. Gammelgården is a furnished smithy cottage in 19th-century style that is shown to visitors.
During the summer Sundays in July, works walks are arranged through the old works buildings, with monuments such as the Anchors (Ankarna) and the Greek temple from the 1700s. The society also celebrates Valborg, Midsummer and Anna Johanna Day, among other occasions, and holds an open house on the second Sunday of Advent.
