About the museum

Hultsfreds hembygdsförening (Hultsfred local heritage association) was formed in 1925 and for many years organised the big local heritage festival, Smålandsdagen, on Hultsfreds slätt (Hultsfred plain), where Kalmar regiment trained until 1918. When the area was sold, a new site was needed. After Lake Hulingen was lowered in 1924, there was new land, and the köping (market town) bought Åängarna in 1932 for both a sports ground and a people's park.

In 1934 the first buildings were moved there, and the association was able to hold its fifteenth Smålandsdagen in the new park. The idea was to gather buildings that tell of the district's military past and of the old building traditions in villages and farms around Hultsfred. All houses in the park have been moved from other places and have, as far as possible, kept their original condition. The interiors are mainly typical of the 19th century and the early 20th century. The driving force Janne Larsson led the park's development until his death in 1952, and a small bronze statue, Nya vingar (New Wings), commemorates his effort.

In the park there are, among other things, Dalsebostugan from the 1840s, Andersbostugan, a backcottage (backstuga) from the 1850s, the soldier's croft Bergebo from the 18th century, a cowshed, a loft shed, a skvaltkvarn (water-driven grain mill), a flax sauna and a coffee cottage. On Hultsfreds slätt the association shows the exhibition Rätt & Slätt about life on the training ground, and in Dalsebostugan there is a small museum with tools, a schoolroom and a textile chamber.
