About the museum
For a large part of the 1900s Hultsfred was known for its house manufacturing. Hultsfreds Träförädling (timber processing) was founded in 1913, and together with Smålandsexport the company began manufacturing ready-to-assemble small houses. After a bankruptcy, production continued in 1928 under the name Standard-hus. In the 1940s Hultsfreds Träförädling, Standardhus and Svenska Idealhus were taken over by Södra Skogsägarna (Södra Forest Owners), and in 1960 they were merged under the name Hultsfreds-Hus.
The house factory's heyday was 1965–1973, when more than 2,000 houses were delivered each year; in the peak year 1969, 3,174 house units left the factory. Many houses went to Denmark. Hultsfreds-Hus was closed in 1992, and thanks to a few employees a great deal of material was saved, which became the basis of the museum.
The museum is today managed by Hultsfreds hembygdsförening (local heritage society). The exhibition includes office premises with drawing tables and office machines from the 1940s to the 1980s, house models, house catalogues, pictures and drawings. Much material is still waiting to be processed in the archives.
