About the museum
Hultsfreds Träförädling was formed in 1913 and, together with Smålandsexport, began making flat-pack small houses. After a bankruptcy, house production continued in 1928 under the name Standardhus on Hultsfreds northern industrial area. In the 1940s Hultsfreds Träförädling, Standardhus and Svenska Idealhus were taken over by Södra Skogsägarna, and the three companies were merged. From 1960 the company was called Hultsfreds-Hus.
In the 20th century Hultsfred was known for its house manufacturing, which shaped the town in many ways. Between 1928 and 1993 about 60,000 houses were made, and in the peak years 1965–1973 over 2,000 timber houses were delivered each year. Many local residents and people from the surrounding area worked at the company. When operations were closed down in 1992, large amounts of material were saved by a few far-sighted employees, and this became the foundation of the museum.
The museum is today run by Hultsfreds hembygdsförening. Visitors can see office premises with drawing tables and office machines from the 1940s to the 1980s, as well as models of houses, house catalogues, pictures and drawings. The archives also hold a large amount of material that has not yet been processed.
