About the museum
Svenska VävstolsMuseet (the Swedish Loom Museum) opened on 14 October 1995 in a large house from 1915 on Hantverksgatan in Glimåkra. The house was built by Martin Svensson and was the first in the village with central heating. The last owner before the museum lived on in part of the house until 2003 and, through his rent, helped the activity get going.
The museum was started by a non-profit association with the help of a donation of SEK 100,000 from the weaving teacher Mai Swanström. The intention was to create a living museum with exhibitions, active weaving and a café. At its start Glimåkra was called the Mecka of weaving (vävningens Mecka).
The museum has a permanent exhibition of looms and tools and a library of textile books. Every year it arranges exhibitions, lectures and eight to ten courses in handicraft and traditional crafts, with emphasis on handweaving, and Vävdagar i Glimåkra (Weaving Days in Glimåkra) are held in cooperation with training providers, associations and companies. Since 2004 the museum has been part of the group of working life museums.
