About the museum

Strömsdals hytta (Strömsdal Ironworks) was established in 1727 by the works owners Sebastian Grave and Hans Olofsson Ström in Finnskogen, where there were not yet any ironworks. The works got its name after Ström. The blast furnace supplied pig iron to Gravendals hammare (Gravendal hammers), and the ore came from the mines at Grängesberg and was transported across the lake Norra Hörken.

Already after fifteen years a larger furnace was built, with a chimney nine metres high. Around the furnace, roasting pits, charcoal houses, a pig iron store, a small forge (klensmedja) and water-driven hammers grew up, and crofters burned charcoal for the works. In 1873 the railway between Hörken and Fredriksberg came, and Strömsdal became an important railway location with a workshop, a foundry, engine sheds and a sawmill.

In 1909 the furnace was blown out for good, and goods traffic on the railway ceased in 1945. In the village there are the furnace ruin, a dam system, a small forge, a manor house and Dagkarlsstugan (the Day Labourers' Cottage), which was formerly a night lodging for day labourers at the works. Dagkarlsstugan is today used by Strömsdals Hembygdsvänner (Strömsdal Local Heritage Friends), who keep it open in summer with a café and exhibitions. In July Strömsdalsdagen (Strömsdal Day) is celebrated during Säfsenveckan (Säfsen Week).
