About the museum
Skifsen is one of the six first settlements in Säfsen where the forest Finns settled around 1620. The Puuroinen Bure family dominated the place during the 1600s and into the 1700s, and it was inhabited until the mid-1940s, when the last farms were demolished and the land was planted with spruce. The spruce forest was felled in 2022.
Since 2005 the association Skifsens Vänner (Friends of Skifsen) has worked voluntarily to recreate a Finnish farm as it might have looked in the 1750s. They build with historical techniques and materials from the district. Today there is, among other things, a working smoke sauna, a cooking house with a stove, a smoke cabin with a smoke oven, inaugurated in 2017, a post storehouse (stolpbod), a barn and a drying shed (ria). A Swedish cottage (svenskstuga) was erected in 2022 and inaugurated during Skifsen Day in 2025.
The farm has been part of Ekomuseum Bergslagen since 2018. On site there is signposted information about the life of the forest Finns, and the association holds open days, guided tours and smoke sauna bathing for both the public and groups.
