About the museum
Tanums hällristningsmuseum, also known as Underslös museum, is an information and documentation centre for the World Heritage area in Tanum in northern Bohuslän. The museum records and documents rock carvings and archives material about them, and it is the only place in Northern Europe that offers training in the art of documenting rock carvings.
The museum is private and is run on a voluntary basis by the Scandinavian Society for Prehistoric Art, an independent association that works with documentation, exhibitions, courses, education and publishing to increase knowledge of and promote research into Scandinavian prehistoric art. Finances rely solely on membership fees and donations, and volunteer work is essential to the operation.
The exhibition provides an introduction to the iconography of prehistoric times in several languages. The museum also arranges courses and guided tours, including night excursions, to well-known and less well-known rock carving sites, and the archives of carvings and documentation material are open to researchers and other interested people.
