About the museum
Svenska Rayon Museum in Älvenäs, in the old commercial centre by Ingenjörsvägen, is run by Nors hembygdsförening and was inaugurated in 2012. The museum tells of the industrial era that began during the Second World War, when blockades meant that Sweden's textile industry stood still due to a shortage of cotton and wool.
In 1941 KF (the Swedish Co-operative Union) and 166 Swedish textile companies joined forces to start a cellulose factory, where fibres made from wood pulp would replace imported cotton and wool. This became Svenska Rayon AB in Älvenäs, and the factory was of great importance for how the community of Vålberg and the Norsbygden district grew after the war.
The exhibition aims to keep the memory of cellulose manufacturing at Svenska Rayon alive for future generations. The museum also illuminates other parts of the district's industrial history, such as Edsvalla bruk, Bobinfabriken and Moelvens sågverk (sawmill), and several films can be seen. The society arranges viewings, film and storytelling evenings and group visits on request.
