About the museum

Forngården is a small open-air museum in Trollhättan, at the edge of the sloping rock massif of Strömslund down towards the Göta älv (river). Since 1934 older buildings from the district have been moved here to be preserved. The land is owned by the municipality, while the buildings are owned and looked after by Trollhättebygdens Fornminnesförening (the Trollhättan District Ancient Monuments Association).

On the site there are seven buildings and a bell tower, as well as milestones, sundials and millstones. The houses show traditional Swedish building methods in the Trollhättan area, including a ryggåsstuga (ridge-beam cottage), a framkammarstuga (front-chamber cottage), an enkammarstuga (single-room cottage) and a härbre (storehouse). Among the buildings are a bell tower from Fors church in Sjuntorp, Betty Back's cottage from the late 1700s, a härbre from Ale-Skövde from 1734 and a water-powered mill from the area around Hjärtum church.

Because few houses of this type remain in Trollhättan, Forngården is important for the town's history. The cottages are open on Sundays in summer, and groups can book visits all year round.
