About the museum

Sveriges Tennismuseum (Sweden's Tennis Museum) is located in the middle of Båstad, which has been the centre of Swedish tennis since Crown Prince Gustaf, later Gustaf V, brought the sport from England. The museum was inaugurated in 1997 by Stefan Edberg, and extensive collections already existed at that time; they have since grown thanks to gifts from tennis enthusiasts all over the country.

The project Tidernas Tennis (Tennis of the Ages) was run in 1997–2001 by the Swedish Tennis Association (Svenska Tennisförbundet), Båstad Municipality and the Stiftelsen Båstadtennis foundation. In 2001 the association Föreningen Sveriges Tennismuseum was formed, a non-profit association that today runs the museum and whose main task is to document Swedish tennis history and make it accessible to the public. The picture archive comprises about 29,000 photographs.

In the museum the visitor follows Swedish tennis history in pictures, texts and films. There is an extensive collection of rackets and objects donated by well-known people in the Swedish tennis family, large glass cabinets with tennis clothing from different eras, and a section on the Swedish tennis miracle (tennisundret) that began with Björn Borg. The Swedish Tennis Hall of Fame was created in 2003, and the first inductees were Björn Borg, Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg.
