About the museum
Ebbaredsstugan is a ryggåsstuga of the South Götland type that originally stood in the village of Ebbared in the Veinge forest district, where it was the main building of a four-wing farm. The year 1824 is carved into the stackarebjälke (main beam) together with the initials of Hans Nilsson and Ingegärd Andersdotter, who lived there with their five children. The cottage has a högstuga (parlour) and a kitchen separated by the stackarebjälke, and on both sides there are härbren (log storehouses) used as a weaving room, storeroom and bedroom.
In 1915 the farm was bought by two brothers, who dismantled the building and moved it to Mellbystrand, where it was used as a summer cottage for four years. Södra Hallands Hembygds- och Fornminnesförening (South Halland Local Heritage and Antiquities Association) bought it in 1919 and re-erected it in Stadsparken (the City Park) in Laholm. The cottage was opened at Whitsun in 1920 and has since then functioned as a local history museum.
The association, today called Södra Hallands hembygdsförening, also manages Gammelgården in Hishult, a four-wing 18th-century farm with a ryggåsstuga, where visits are booked separately.
